Enabling research for National Health at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research

Category : Case Study

Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) is the oldest Health Research Institute in the country. It was informally established in 1920 with the arrival at Yaba of a team from the Rockefeller Foundation on Yellow fever to the West coast of Africa. The research institute was established through the National Science and Technology Act of 1977. NIMR has the following mandate:

* Conduct basic, applied and operational research for the prevention and control of communicable and noncommunicable diseases of public health importance in the country in collaboration with the federal and state ministries of health and other stakeholders.

* Provide facilities for clinical and biomedical research in collaboration with Medical schools, Universities and other Health-related institutions in and outside Nigeria

* Develop Human capacity for health research and specialized health care in the country through relevant training

* Collate and disseminate important health research data / findings in the country through scientific publications and other channels of communication to the wider public within and outside the country

NIMR is primarily funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to conduct basic, applied and operational research, but because of the strategic position it occupies, NIMR has gone beyond her research activities to provide services, training and documentation of important health-related information to support the TB, HIV/AIDS and malaria programs in Nigeria.

NIMR’s Human Virology Laboratory (HVL) obtained ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2008 and The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) FOUR STAR recognition level in 2013.

“Roche has contributed immensely to our goal of providing diagnostic services for assays not commonly available in the country and ISN has been a solid support in the maintenance of these instruments”
– Dr. Rosemary Audu, Head, Human Virology Laboratory, NIMR

To enable it meet its vision and mission, NIMR’s HVL turned to ISN to supply and maintain high-quality diagnostic and research equipment, including the Roche COBAS 4800 system and the COBAS Ampliprep / Taqman system (CAP-CTM). The Roche COBAS 4800 system is a fully automated system for sample preparation with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology for amplification and detection of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Chlamydia Trachomatis / N. Gonorrhea (CT/NG) testing.

The Roche COBAS AmpliPrep and Taqman (CAP-CTM) system is a fully automated platform for real-time PCR assays for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Cytomegalovirus (CMV). The CAP -CTM is also used by HVL for DNA PCR for early infant diagnosis of HIV. This has greatly reduced the test turnaround time for these assays.

In addition to supplying the instruments and accompanying reagents, ISN Products Nigeria Ltd. guarantees that the uptime on the machines are maximized by ensuring that our highly trained corps of biomedical engineers perform regular maintenance on the machines and are always available to address emergency technical issues that may arise. Furthermore, ISN’s experienced applications specialists work with NIMR on maximizing the capabilities of the instruments in conducting routine and rare tests.
