Diabetes Causes Comorbidity Complications in COVID-19 Patients

Dear Jane,

What’s better than an information email as you stay safe and healthy?

It has been observed that the COVID-19 infection is a challenge for people with diabetes. Most severe cases of COVID-19 have occurred in patients with underlying comorbidities, with the most frequent being hypertension and diabetes according to the article, COVID-19 and Diabetes: Knowledge In Progress by the Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, April 9, 2020 edition. Volume 162.

If you have a family history of diabetes, this is a crucial period to take extra measures because you may be at risk of having prediabetes which could later evolve to diabetes.

Consider these helpful tips:

  • Know Your Family’s Unique Risk: It is important to understand and research on what triggers diabetes in your family. Common risks include a history of relatives who are overweight or family members with high blood pressure.
  • Physical Exercise: Taking brisk walks and engaging in some sort of exercise will help regulate/lower your blood sugar level and boost your insulin sensitivity.
  • Watch Your Diet: Making healthy food and drink choices is one of the best ways to reduce your diabetic tendencies. Meals rich in fibre and low in calories can help to reduce the risk of heart diseases and promote weight loss by making you feel full for a long time.
  • Lose Extra Weight: It is advised that you maintain a healthy weight or lose some if you are overweight.
  • Get Medical Advice: You can seek the opinion of a medical doctor as health professionals are in the best position to give advice and ensure you go through the necessary screening. This is especially recommended for people above the age of 45.

Checking your blood sugar level regularly is also a good way to manage yourself. To find out more about our diabetes management products and services, contact us on +234 (0) 805 732 4775 or
