What your result means

A self-test is a screening test. It tells you whether you need to take a next step, and what that step is.

Non-reactive

No HIV antibodies were found. If there was a possible exposure in the last [WINDOW PERIOD], the test may be too early to pick it up — test again after [WINDOW PERIOD] to be sure.

Reactive

This is not a diagnosis. It means you need a confirmatory test at a clinic or laboratory. That step is routine, it is free at most public centres, and starting treatment early means a long, ordinary life.

How accurate is it?

CheckNOW HIV Self-Test has the highest sensitivity, detecting HIV-positive patients with 100% accuracy, and 99% specificity.

Does it hurt?

It is a small finger prick, the same as in a blood sugar check. It is over in a second.

Will anyone know I bought it?

No. You buy it at the counter like any other item, or have it delivered to your location.

What if I tested too soon after an exposure?

CheckNOW can detect HIV antibodies within 3 weeks of exposure. You can test again later, but speak to a healthcare specialist if you are worried in the meantime.

Is there an age limit?

HIV self-testing can be used by people who are 18 years and above.
