Why it matters
A healthy newborn can still carry a condition no one can see. Nigeria has the world’s highest burden of sickle cell disease, with around 150,000 babies born with it every year. Found early, a baby can begin care before the first crisis, and the odds change completely.
What newborn screening does
One simple test in the earliest days finds conditions that would otherwise stay hidden, including sickle cell disease, alpha and beta thalassemia, congenital hyperthyroidism and G6PD deficiency.
A result is not the end of the story. It is the start of timely care.
