In November 2024, Onco-Genomics – a genetic testing centre based in Lagos, Nigeria – launched the first paternity testing service in Nigeria powered by next-generation sequencing technology (NGS).
Founded by Dr Paul Faduola, Onco-Genomics Laboratory is a premier genetics and molecular diagnostics centre dedicated to providing cutting-edge solutions in precision medicine and reproductive health. As a firm believer in the nation’s healthcare industry, Dr Faduola chose to find ways to improve genetic testing in Nigeria by providing best-practice solutions in precision medicine, reproductive health, and forensic genomics. As a result, Onco-Genomics has unveiled Nigeria’s first paternity testing service powered by Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology.
Previously, genetic testing in Nigeria was done by using Capillary Electrophoresis (CE), particularly with regards to Paternity (DNA) testing, or samples were exported abroad. These methods presented both advantages and concerns. Sample exportation allowed us to access advanced testing but also created forex burden that made testing expensive. On the other hand, in-country paternity testing which relied on CE has been fraught with limitations around accuracy and resolution. These challenges called for changes on the frontiers of genetic testing.
NGS as a technique for paternity testing provides a broader view to generate more markers that become the change makers in DNA testing when compared to CE. NGS does this by analysing thousands of genetic markers which enables the detection of different genetic variations across multiple genes simultaneously. It also outperforms other technologies when handling degraded DNA and low-quality samples or resolving cases involving close relatives.
The recent launch of NGS-based Paternity (DNA) Testing in Nigeria by Ono-Genomics will eliminate delays and costs associated with sample exportation while providing access to faster, quality results. It also means that families can be assured of the confidentiality and data security of their samples within the country.
Onco-Genomics is open to partner with private and state actors within West Africa to provide relevant solutions in genetic testing. Beyond, paternity testing, the clinic is poised to provide solutions for oncology cases thereby contributing to the advancement of precision medicine in cancer treatment. Whether you are a private fertility centre, a government forensic centre, or an oncology clinic, you can partner with Onco-Genomics to provide the diagnostic solutions that you require to achieve your goals.
ISN Medical is proud to partner with QIAGEN to provide this world-class genetic solution using next-generation sequencing (NGS) at Onco-Genomics. This is a turning point for Nigeria’s (and indeed, West Africa) healthcare and human-identification industries as this service empowers us to take charge of how we use our data to solve national or regional issues to meet our specific needs.
Nigerians can now access advanced, accurate paternity (DNA) testing services in-country and at more affordable rates with Onco-Genomics. Whether it is for personal, legal, or medical reasons, the team is happy to offer their services.
Onco-Genomics is located at Plot 8, Unity Street, Coker Estate, Shasha, Akowonjo, Egbeda, Lagos. You may also write them via email [info@oncogenomics.com.ng] or call 07062014176.
